Should You Hire a Car at the Airport or in the City in Ho Chi Minh City?

Short answer: is it cheaper to hire a car at the airport or in the city? With a car and driver, neither option is. The fare is set by the route and the vehicle, not by where you are picked up. A transfer from Tan Son Nhat Airport to the inner-city districts costs 300,000 VND in a 4- or 7-seat car, and going straight from the airport to Vung Tau or Mui Ne costs the same one-way fare as starting in the city. What changes is convenience: when you need the car, how much luggage you carry and where your first day takes you. If you are planning your whole stay, start with our guide to car hire in Ho Chi Minh City.

This article explains how airport and city pickups work, what each one costs, and how to choose the right option for your arrival and the rest of your trip.

How car hire works at Ho Chi Minh City airport

In many countries, you hire a car at the airport by walking to a rental desk, signing a contract and driving away. In Vietnam, most visitors do it differently. Self-drive rental is a small part of the market, and foreign licenses are not always accepted, so the usual way to hire a car is a pre-booked car with a driver.

That changes what “airport hire” means. Instead of collecting keys, you book a vehicle before you fly. Your driver meets you at the arrivals exit holding a sign with your name, helps with your bags and drives you to your hotel or straight to your next destination. In the city, the same car can pick you up at your hotel, apartment or office.

So the choice is not between an airport counter and a city office. It is between being met at the airport when you land, or booking a car later from wherever you are staying.

Is it cheaper at the airport or in the city?

For a car with a driver, the answer is no: neither option is cheaper by itself. Fares depend on the route and the vehicle size. Here is how the same trips compare from each starting point (one way, Vietnam Car Rental prices from October 2026):

Trip From Tan Son Nhat Airport From the city
To the inner-city districts, including District 1 300,000 VND (4- or 7-seat car) Not applicable
To Vung Tau, 4-seat car 750,000 VND 750,000 VND
To Vung Tau, 7-seat car 850,000 VND 850,000 VND
To Mui Ne, 4-seat car 1,500,000 VND 1,500,000 VND
To Mui Ne, 7-seat car 1,600,000 VND 1,600,000 VND

Two details matter when you compare:

  • Round trips start in the city. From the airport, fares to Vung Tau and Mui Ne are one way. Round-trip fares apply to trips that start and end in the city.
  • City trips by the hour are quoted per itinerary. Hourly hire inside Ho Chi Minh City depends on the date, the hours and your stops, so you send your plan and receive one price for it. To keep that price down, see the cheapest way to hire a car with driver.

In other words, you do not save money by waiting until you reach the city, and you do not pay extra for being met at the airport.

When to book your car from the airport

An airport pickup makes the most sense in these situations:

You arrive with luggage or children. After a long flight, a driver waiting at the arrivals exit is the simplest way to reach your hotel. You do not wait in line for a taxi or try to fit suitcases into a small car. A Tan Son Nhat Airport pickup in a 4- or 7-seat car costs 300,000 VND to the inner-city districts.

Your flight lands late or might be delayed. We work 24 hours a day, and there is no charge for waiting time if your flight lands late. Send your flight number when you book so the driver can follow your arrival.

You are going straight to the beach. If your trip starts in Vung Tau or Mui Ne, you can leave directly from the airport at the same one-way fare as from the city. There is no need to spend a night in town and book a second car the next day.

You are arriving as a group. One vehicle keeps everyone and their bags together. Airport transfers to the inner-city districts cost 700,000 VND in a 16-seat van and 2,000,000 VND in a 45-seat coach, so a tour group or a company team can travel in a single vehicle.

When to book your car in the city

A city pickup is usually the better choice when:

You only need a car on some days. Many travelers walk or use ride-hailing for short trips in the center, then book a car only for the days with longer drives. Booking from your hotel means you pay only for those days.

You are planning day trips. Trips to the Cu Chi Tunnels, the Mekong Delta or Tay Ninh start best early in the morning from your hotel. A half-day trip to Cu Chi or a day in the Mekong Delta costs from 1,300,000 VND in a 4- or 7-seat car, and a full day combining both costs from 2,000,000 VND. Our guide to day trips from Ho Chi Minh City has routes and travel times.

You want a round trip. Round-trip fares to places such as Vung Tau and Mui Ne apply from the city, so a same-day round trip is booked as a city pickup.

You need a car for meetings or events. For business travel, the car can wait between appointments and follow your schedule for the day, with the price quoted for your full itinerary.

The common choice: airport transfer plus city bookings

Most visitors combine both. They book an airport pickup for arrival day, book a car from the hotel for the days they need one, and book an airport drop-off for departure. For drop-offs, share your flight time and pickup address, and the car is scheduled with enough time for check-in.

Booking everything at once has one advantage: you send your full plan in one message and receive a single quote, with the vehicle, dates and stops confirmed in advance. You pay nothing upfront and can settle in cash or by bank transfer.

Tips for an easy airport pickup

  1. Send your flight number and arrival time. This lets the driver follow your flight if it is early or late.
  2. Check your terminal. Tan Son Nhat has separate terminals for international and domestic flights. Your ticket shows which one you arrive at; include it when you book.
  3. Count your bags as well as your passengers. Two travelers with large suitcases and a stroller may be more comfortable in a 7-seat car, which costs the same 300,000 VND as a 4-seat car to the inner-city districts.
  4. Keep your phone reachable. You can contact us by phone, WhatsApp or Zalo if you need to find your driver.
  5. Ask for a driver who speaks your language if you need one. A driver who speaks English or another language can be arranged for an extra fee.
