Short answer: is it worth renting a car in Vietnam? For most visitors, renting a car you drive yourself is not worth it, but renting a car with a driver often is. Self-drive means sorting out a license Vietnam accepts, handling dense motorbike traffic and finding parking. Renting a car with a driver gives you the same freedom without any of that, at a fixed price agreed before you travel. If you are starting your trip in the south, see our guide to renting a car with a driver in Ho Chi Minh City for vehicles from 4 to 45 seats.
This article compares the two options honestly, explains when each one makes sense, and shows what a private car actually costs from Ho Chi Minh City.
What “renting a car” means in Vietnam
In Europe, North America or Australia, renting a car usually means picking up keys at the airport and driving away. In Vietnam it works differently. Self-drive rentals exist, but for many visitors the license rules make them hard to use. The common way to rent a car in Vietnam is a car with a driver: you book a vehicle for a transfer, a day trip or several days, and a local driver comes with it.
So the real question for a traveler is not “car or no car”, but “drive myself, or have someone drive for me?” The answer depends on your license, your route and how much stress you are willing to take on.
Can you legally drive yourself?
The first hurdle is paperwork. Vietnam’s rules on foreign licenses and International Driving Permits are not simple, and official sources do not always agree on which permits are accepted. We cover this in detail in our article can foreigners drive in Vietnam, including what to check with your own embassy before you travel.
In short: if you do not hold a license that Vietnam clearly recognizes, driving yourself is not an option, and an accident without valid papers can leave you uninsured. Many visitors stop here and choose a car with a driver.
Driving yourself or hiring a driver: what each really costs
| Self-drive | Car with driver | |
|---|---|---|
| License | You need a license Vietnam accepts | Not needed, the driver is licensed |
| Traffic | You handle motorbikes, horns and unfamiliar road rules | The driver handles it; you rest or work |
| Navigation | You follow GPS through unfamiliar streets and one-way systems | The driver knows the routes and drop-off points |
| Parking | You find and pay for parking at every stop | The driver waits with the car |
| Fuel and tolls | Paid separately as you go | Included in the quoted fare |
| Accidents and fines | Your responsibility | Handled by the driver and the company |
| Price | Rental fee, plus fuel, tolls, parking and any fines, paid as you go | One fixed price agreed before the trip |
| Flexibility | Full control of time and route | Agree your route and stops when you book |
So, is it worth renting a car in Vietnam? The table shows the real trade-off. The headline price of a self-drive rental leaves out fuel, tolls, parking and the cost of any problem on the road, and you also take on the license question and the risk. A car with a driver comes with one fixed price that already covers fuel, tolls, parking and the driver’s own expenses.
When a car with a driver is worth it
A private car with a driver is usually the better choice in these situations:
Arriving at the airport with luggage. After a long flight, a driver waiting at the arrivals exit with your name on a sign is the easiest start. A Tan Son Nhat Airport transfer to the inner-city districts, including District 1, costs 300,000 VND in a 4- or 7-seat car, and there is no charge for waiting if your flight lands late.
Traveling as a family or group. One vehicle for everyone avoids splitting into several taxis. The same airport transfer costs 700,000 VND in a 16-seat van, and a 29-seat or 45-seat coach is available for larger groups.
Day trips with several stops. Places such as the Cu Chi Tunnels and the Mekong Delta are spread out and poorly served by public transport. A half-day trip to Cu Chi or a day in the Mekong Delta (My Tho, Ben Tre) costs from 1,300,000 VND, and a full day combining both costs from 2,000,000 VND in a 4- or 7-seat car. Our guide to day trips from Ho Chi Minh City has more ideas.
Intercity trips. A private car door to door is often faster and more comfortable than changing between bus, train and taxi. From Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau costs 750,000 VND one way in a 4-seat car, Can Tho 1,400,000 VND, and Da Lat or Nha Trang 2,800,000 VND.
Business travel. If you need to arrive on time and work on the way, a driver lets you take calls and read documents instead of watching the road.

When renting a car may not be worth it
Is it worth renting a car in Vietnam for every trip? Not always, and a private car is not always the best value. Be honest about your trip:
- Short solo trips inside the city. For one person going a few kilometers, a ride-hailing app or a metered taxi is usually enough.
- Long distances with time to spare. For very long journeys such as Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, a domestic flight is far quicker than any car.
- Travelers who want to drive for fun. If driving is part of the trip, a self-drive rental can make sense, but only with valid papers, full insurance and real experience in heavy traffic.
- Backpacking on a tight budget. Sleeper buses are the cheapest way between cities if comfort and time matter less than cost.
What a car with a driver costs from Ho Chi Minh City
Prices for a car with a driver are quoted per vehicle, not per person, and include the driver, fuel, tolls and parking. Sample fares from October 2026:
| Trip | 4-seat car | 7-seat car |
|---|---|---|
| Tan Son Nhat Airport to inner-city districts | 300,000 VND | 300,000 VND |
| Cu Chi Tunnels and Mekong Delta, full day | from 2,000,000 VND | from 2,000,000 VND |
| Vung Tau, one way | 750,000 VND | 850,000 VND |
| Mui Ne, one way | 1,500,000 VND | 1,600,000 VND |
| Can Tho, one way | 1,400,000 VND | 1,500,000 VND |
| Da Lat or Nha Trang, one way | 2,800,000 VND | 3,000,000 VND |
Hourly hire inside the city depends on the date and your plan, so it is quoted per itinerary. Nothing is paid in advance: you settle the fare in cash or by bank transfer.
Tips if you decide to rent a car with a driver
- Send your full plan when you book. Dates, pickup point, every stop and the number of passengers and suitcases. The quote then covers the whole trip.
- Pick the right size. For two or three people, a 4-seat car is enough. Families with luggage are more comfortable in a 7-seat car, and groups of 10 to 15 fit a 16-seat van.
- Share your flight number for airport pickups, so the driver can follow delays.
- Ask for an English-speaking driver if you need one. This is available on request for an extra fee.
- Book early for holidays. Tet (Lunar New Year) and public holidays are the busiest times of the year for private cars.
Frequently asked questions
Is it worth renting a car in Vietnam as a tourist?
Renting a car you drive yourself is rarely worth it for tourists because of license rules, traffic and parking. Renting a car with a driver is worth it for airport transfers, day trips, family travel and intercity routes, where a fixed price covers fuel, tolls and parking.
Can I rent a car without a driver in Ho Chi Minh City?
Some companies offer self-drive rental, usually to drivers with a Vietnamese license. Vietnam Car Rental only offers cars with a professional driver, so you do not need a license to travel with us.
Is a car with driver good value for a group?
It can be, because prices are per vehicle, not per person. A family of four pays 300,000 VND for an airport transfer in a 7-seat car, and a group of 12 can share one 16-seat van for 700,000 VND instead of splitting into several taxis.
Do I have to pay a deposit?
No. You receive a quote as soon as you share your itinerary, and you can pay in cash or by bank transfer.
